Moody's more optimistic for 'market leading' colleges
For "market leading" colleges, a distinct minority within higher education, Moody's Investors Service is releasing a 2011 outlook of "stable," up from "negative," which is still the Moody's outlook for most of higher education. The market leaders, Moody's says, have "global reputations and attract strong student demand, philanthropic support, and research funding even during weak economic periods." Most others remain vulnerable to insecure sources of revenue such as state appropriations and tuition, Moody's says.

Support falters for S.C. State president
South Carolina State University's Faculty Senate has given President George Cooper and his administration a vote of "no confidence." Shared governance, financial oversight and vision for the school are among the Senate's issues of concern. Cooper's personal attorney says the president takes the position that the Faculty Senate does not reflect the full faculty.

Republicans hope to halt U of W unionization
Academic staff members, including doctors, student-services coordinators, and computer technicians, who work for the U of Wisconsin have asked Republican state lawmakers to do something to keep them from being assigned to labor unions without their approval. Four lawmakers plan to introduce legislation to halt the state employment-relations commission’s plan.

Yale settles Mazzuto gift dispute
Yale agreed to pay $1-million to Industrial Enterprises of America, to settle the company’s complaint that its former chief executive, John Mazzuto, had made a $1.7-million donation to Yale in shares of company stock that he may have obtained illegally. The university built a baseball facility with the gift.

Disaster averted
Police at California State U-Northridge may have prevented a tragedy when they detained a deranged student later found to have a shotgun and bomb-making ingredients in his dorm room. David Everson's arrest came just days before the shootings in Arizona. Bail for Everson has been increased to $1 million.

Shots fired into Baker U dormitory
Five shots rang out, piercing the glass rear door of a dormitory and waking students at Baker U’s main campus in Kansas. The shots left bullet holes in the women’s dormitory door but no one was injured. Police are looking for the shooter.

Forced pysch hospital stay prompts student suit
A Brooklyn College honors student who claims college staff committed her to a mental institution after she complained she was being secretly videotaped by her landlord is suing the school. Chinemerem Eze spent 2 weeks at a psychiatric hospital after college officials forced her into an ambulance, according to the suit. Eze, an exchange student from Nigeria, had discovered a hidden camera in her off-campus apartment. She has already settled with the hospital for a 6-figure sum.
