(Crain's) — Chicago-area universities reported a double-digit rise in the number of students applying to be freshmen at their campuses.

The University of Chicago said it received 21,669 undergraduate college applications, the most it has ever gotten for an incoming freshman class and a 12% increase from last year. The school said it saw increased numbers of applications from minorities, international students and those with an interest in the arts.
